St. Albans is one of the UKs most medieval and historical towns and was the unlikely home of electronic drum pioneers Simmons. From 1980 to the early 90's the distinctive, electronic Simmons sound can be found on countless albums from notable users such as Phil Collins, Bill Brufford and many others plus bands such as The Human League, Culture Club and Duran Duran. The first kits, with their famous hexagonal shape, and "wrist breaking" rubber pads were based on analog synthesizers and later systems offered sample-based sounds and programmable memories. The single pad SDS-1 was used to add the Simmons sound to acoustic kits whilst the SDS-5 was the complete electronic solution favoured by many of the bands of the day. Top of the Range was the SDS-X (launched in 1989), a very expensive digital system with "zoned" pads, sampling, sophisticated user interface and an outstanding professional sound.
During the 90s music tastes changed and the distinctive electronic sounds became dated and acoustic drums once again came to the fore. Sadly the company closed down in 1993, but their products have since gained cult status and are still highly desirable and wanted by enthusiasts all over the world.
